How to fix the TIN matching error for the recipient?

TIN Matching typically fails when the recipient name and TIN combination provided don’t match IRS records.

 Key Points to Remember:

  • The IRS rejects your return if there is a mismatch between the provided TIN and the name in IRS records.
  • If your return has failed TIN validation, corrections must be made within 96 hours or by the scheduled submission date, whichever is later.
  • If not corrected, the forms are transmitted with the incorrect TIN provided, which may lead to potential rejection and penalties.

Follow the steps below to fix the TIN validation error:

  • Navigate to the '1099/W-2' dashboard —> Select the Payer —> 'Submitted' tab. Under the TIN Matching section, click 'Fix Errors'.

  • Review and correct the name, TIN, or TIN type for the recipients with errors. If you believe the previously reported TIN is correct, you may skip this error, and we’ll transmit your forms as they are.

Instructions:

  • You have 2 attempts to correct and revalidate the TIN within 96 hours or the scheduled transmission date (whichever is later). If both attempts fail, further validation is not possible. However, you can still update the TIN within the specified timeframe to ensure the changes are reflected in the form submitted to federal/state agencies and in the generated PDF copies.

  • After the specified timeframe, if the TIN is not updated, the forms will be transmitted as they are.
