I’ve changed my business name. How do I update it with the IRS?

If your business name has changed, you must notify the IRS to ensure your records are up to date. Follow the process that applies to your specific business type:

Business Type

Required Action

Sole Proprietorship

  • Send a letter to the IRS (to the address where you file returns), including your old name, new name, and EIN.

  • Make sure it is signed by an authorized representative or business owner.

Corporation

  • Indicate the name change on your next filed tax return:

    • Form 1120: Page 1, line E, Box 3

    • Form 1120-S: Page 1, Line H, Box 2

  • If you've already filed for the year, you can send a signed notification letter to the IRS.

Partnership

  • Check the name change box on Form 1065 (Page 1, Line G, Box 3) when filing your next return.

  • If the return has already been submitted, send a signed letter with the name change details.

Note: If you file Form 941 or other IRS forms under your new business name before updating your IRS records, your return may be rejected due to a name mismatch. Make sure to complete the name change process with the IRS first.
