How do I calculate the estimated withholding for California Form DE-4 (2025)?
To estimate your total state tax withholding for 2025:
-
Contact your employer to request the amount that will be withheld on your wages based on the marital status and number of withholding allowances you will claim for 2025.
-
Multiply that amount by the number of pay periods remaining in the year.
-
Add any amount that has already been withheld from your paychecks this year.
Example:
Let’s say your employer withholds $75 per paycheck for California taxes.
-
You’re paid bi-weekly and have 18 pay periods remaining this year.
-
$300 has already been withheld in 2025.
Calculation:
$75 × 18 = $1,350
$1,350 + $300 = $1,650
You would enter $1,650 as your estimated withholding for 2025 on Form DE-4.
