What is form 8809?

Form 8809, "Application for Extension of Time to File Information Returns," is a form that both businesses and individuals use to request an extension of the due date for filing federal tax forms. 

There are three types of extensions that you can request using Form 8809

  • An extension of time to file information returns(excluding Form 1099-NEC/W-2)
  • An extension of time to file 1099-NEC & W-2 forms
  • An extension to send recipient copies of information returns
