How to close my NC withholding account?

To close your North Carolina (NC) withholding account, follow these steps:

  • File your final withholding return:
Submit your final NC withholding tax return (Form NC-5, NC-5Q, or NC-3 based on your filing frequency), reporting all withholding up to the date you stopped paying wages.

  • Pay all outstanding taxes:
Ensure that any remaining tax liability, including penalties or interest, is fully paid.

  • Submit a request to close the account:
Notify the North Carolina Department of Revenue (NCDOR) that the account should be closed. You can do this in two ways:
    • Online: Log in to the NCDOR eServices portal and request to close your withholding account.
    • By Phone or Mail: Contact the NCDOR Withholding Tax Division and provide your account details along with the effective closure date.

  • Confirm closure:
Once the account is officially closed, NCDOR will provide confirmation. Keep this confirmation for your records.
