What is the CUSIP number, and when must it be used in Form 1099-DA?

A CUSIP ( Committee on Uniform Securities Identification Procedures) number is a unique 9-character code (letters and numbers) that identifies a specific financial security in the United States. It works like a serial number for stocks, bonds, and other securities, making it easier to track them in trading and reporting.

If you are reporting a tokenized security transaction, you must include the CUSIP number or another applicable identifying number of the digital asset as required under Regulations §1.6045-1(c)(8)(i)(D)(1).

Why does it matter?

CUSIP numbers are used by brokers and the IRS to ensure they’re referring to the same security, thereby avoiding confusion when companies may have similar names.
