How do I obtain a South Carolina Withholding File number?

To legally withhold South Carolina state taxes, employers must first register with the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) to obtain a Withholding File Number. This number identifies your business for all withholding purposes and must be included on all withholding tax returns and correspondence with the SCDOR.

You can obtain a Withholding File Number by:

  • Online via MyDORWAY:

Register your business through the SCDOR’s MyDORWAY portal for a fast and secure process. Once registered, you may receive your Withholding File Number immediately.

  • Paper (Form SCDOR-111):

Complete the SCDOR-111, Business Tax Application form to apply by mail or in person. Once processed, the SCDOR will issue your Withholding File Number by mail.

Once registered, the SCDOR will issue a unique Withholding File Number. Employers must use this number when filing WH-1605 (quarterly) and WH-1606 (annual) withholding returns, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance with South Carolina tax laws.
