What are the Alaska payroll tax registration requirements?


 Alaska is one of the states that does not impose state income taxes, but it requires employers to report unemployment insurance (UI). In order to report and pay UI taxes to Alaska, employers must register with the Alaska  (DOLWD). Here’s the detailed information to help you understand Alaska tax requirements. 
 

Alaska Registration Unemployment Taxes

Register for the Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOL)

You must register with the Alaska (DOLWD) to report the state withholdings. Here are some common methods to register. 

  • Register via Online

    • Create or log in to a myAlaska account.

    • Go to Services → Employment Security Tax → Employer Maintenance → New Registration.

    • Complete the online form (Form TREG or the equivalent) with details like legal business name, FEIN, payroll start date, and contact information. 

    • Submit. You’ll typically receive an 8-digit Employer Account Number and your assigned UI tax rate within 5–7 days via email and mail.
       

  • Register by mail

    • Download and complete the Alaska Employer Registration Form (TREG) with business details, FEIN, payroll date, and responsible parties.

  • Number Issued:

After completing the registration, you will receive Employer Account Number. This number is used to file UI reports and make unemployment tax payments using Form (TQ01C).

How to file?

  • File via Online: Sign in

  • File by Mail: Download the Form TQ01C and send it with payment.

Deadline: Quarterly withholding tax returns are due by the last day of the month following the end of the calendar quarter.

  • Q1 (Jan–Mar): April 30

  • Q2 (Apr–Jun): July 31

  • Q3 (Jul–Sep): October 31

  • Q4 (Oct–Dec): January 31

Amendments:

To correct the errors on previously filed Form A1-QRT, you must follow the instructions given below:

  • Download Form TADJ

  • Obtain a copy of Form TQ01C that was originally filed.

  • Make sure to file Form TADJ as soon as possible once you spotted an error.

New Hire Report

All employers hiring new or rehired employees (those returning to work after a break of 60+ days)  must report to the Arizona New Hire Reporting Center within 20 days of the hire or rehire date.

How to File New Hire Report 

Employers must report all newly hired or rehired employees to AK Child Support Services Division 

To report a new hire or rehired details follow the steps below:

  • Sign in to My Alaska account.

  • Enter the FEIN and select continue without updating

  • Select Add under ‘Add Employees’ and enter the new hire information

  • Repeat the same process to add more employees and select ‘Submit List.’
