What are the required federal filing forms to run payroll?

Employers must file the required form that suits their business. Some of the federal filing forms are:

  • Form 941 (Employer's Quarterly Tax Return): You must file Form 941 if the Social Security and Medicare taxes are withheld from the employee's paychecks. It must be filed for every quarter.
  • Form 943 (Employer's Annual Federal Tax Return for agriculture employees): You must file Form 943 if you pay wages to one or more farmworkers and their wages are subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes. It must be filed once a year.
  • Form 944 (Employer's Annual Federal Tax Return): You must file Form 944 if the withheld Social Security and Medicare taxes are $1000 or less. It must be filed once a year.
