How to file an extension for Form 1042?

To file an extension for Form 1042, withholding agents must submit Form 7004, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns, by the due date of March 17, 2025. Filing Form 7004 grants an automatic six-month extension, moving the deadline to September 17, 2025. 

However, this extension applies only to filing the return, not to the payment of any tax due. Withholding agents must estimate and pay the total tax liability by the March 17 deadline to avoid interest and penalties.
