How long does the IRS take to issue refunds to taxpayers?

Generally, the IRS issues most refunds less than 21 days after receiving the taxpayer’s return. However, refunds for people claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) can't be issued before mid-February.  It is expected to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards by Feb. 27, 2024, if the taxpayer chooses direct deposit and there are no other issues with the tax return.

Note: If you’re making major purchases or paying bills, you should not rely on receiving a federal tax refund by a specific date, as the returns may require additional review.
