What circumstances exempt you from filing Form 1098-T?

You do not need to file Form 1098-T or provide a statement for the following:

  • Courses that do not grant academic credit, even if the student is enrolled in a degree program 
  • Students who are not citizens of the United States, unless the student specifically requests it
  • Students whose eligible tuition and related expenses are completely waived or covered totally by scholarships
  • Students for whom you do not keep a separate financial account and whose eligible tuition and related fees are funded by an institution's official billing arrangement with the student's employer or a governmental organization such as the Department of Veterans Affairs or the Department of Defense.
