A name control is a series of characters derived from a taxpayer's legal name as indicated on Form SS-4, also known as the Application for Employer Identification Number.
When processing a taxpayer's filed return or extension, the IRS utilizes this name control and verifies the accuracy of the name/TIN combination by comparing it against a comprehensive file containing all the employer identification numbers (EINs) issued by the IRS.
