A name control is a series of characters derived from a taxpayer's legal name as indicated on Form SS-4, also known as the Application for Employer Identification Number.

When processing a taxpayer's filed return or extension, the IRS utilizes this name control and verifies the accuracy of the name/TIN combination by comparing it against a comprehensive file containing all the employer identification numbers (EINs) issued by the IRS.

If the name control matches the corresponding record in the IRS database, it is considered correct. However, if there is a mismatch in the name control, the IRS may reject the taxpayer's filed return due to this inconsistency.
