I just signed up and came across PTIN. What is that?

The IRS gives a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) to the authorized agents and tax return preparers who prepare tax returns on behalf of taxpayers. There is no need to provide the Social Security Number when the PTIN is utilized to prepare a tax return (SSN). Instead of using the SSN, they can simply mention this PTIN.

Things to be remembered:

  • You should be above 18 years of age to get PTIN.
  • One PTIN cannot be used by multiple individuals.
