What is PTIN?

A Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) is a unique identification number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to tax preparers who are authorized to prepare federal tax returns.

Anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for pay must have a valid PTIN. This number allows the IRS to identify the preparer on the tax return.
